May the Angels be with You

The one thing most of us have in common on a holiday like this is family. Hopefully, we are surrounded by them or will be talking to them today. Some of us will also be missing loved ones but thinking of them fondly. I will be missing all my girls, my step-daughters and granddaughters, but they will all be together out in Kansas with lots of extended family. I will be missing my four siblings and nieces and nephews that live in Colorado and my adopted family of close friends out there. Because this year I am having a sunny Christmas in California and will be taking off shortly with my handsome better half to go spend the rest of the day with my parents, my older sister, and her family. So, I will have some family while missing others, but I am terribly grateful to have so many loved ones and more grateful still that we all get along so well!

I thought a little Eve Thissen would be a perfect accent to the day with her beautifully expressive images, portraying love and tenderness with simple lines and shapes that create tiny but unmistakable gestures. Today will be all about family for so many of us, and this is the feeling I hope you all have as you greet and hold and hug and talk and laugh with them.

Happy holidays and a very warm and merry Christmas to you, my generous and kind polymer and craft art family.

Dreaming of Spring

November 4, 2015

NevenkaSabo Fairy Garden EarringsToday’s beautifully layered pendants come from my dear friend Nevenka Sabo, who is quite the exploratory soul. She is always trying something new, so it can be hard to pin down her signature style, but her work is always fashionably detailed and beautifully finished.

These unseasonably fresh Spring earrings (it is Spring down under, isn’t it?)  are a nice departure from the Fall-moving-into-Winter look that we’re seeing everywhere  here in the states. It’s another, but very different, example of layering for this week. There may not actually be a lot of layering here; it’s hard to say. But between the alcohol inks and what might be stamps or image-transfers laid one over the other, the details look to be buried in the translucent clay.

One way to find out would be to jump over to her Etsy page and buy the tutorial. Personally, I am refraining from doing just that at the moment because I have too much to do to get the Winter issue ready to get out to the printers, but why don’t you give it a try?

Nevenka shows off her fashionable goodies on her Flickr pagesher Facebook page and in her Etsy shop, where you can find other tutorials to pique your interest and keep you busy as we slide into Winter still dreaming of Spring.

Edges

August 27, 2012

Eva Haskova, from the Czech Republic, has applied what looks to be the edges of stacks into a contemporary design for a simple but eye-catching pendant. She uses just a little repetition of line and color and a simple single accent. Design does not always have to be complex … simplicity is a wonderful approach.

Nothing needs to be wasted with polymer. Not even those edges you trim off.  They have such wonderful texture when you turn them on their sides! It’s like getting a bonus project half way done simply by working on another one. Polymer is too cool.

It’s All in the Details

August 22, 2012

Polymer is highly versatile but working small can be tricky for even the most talented among us. Eva Margriet Thissen  from Herne, Germany seems to have the art of teeny-tiny polymer bits down beautifully.

The quality and crispness of the details on this 1″ wide pendant is amazing — and adorable at that. The stance of Little Red Riding Hood perfectly captures how a little girl would go skipping off through the forest. The whimsical shapes of the trees, even with a subdued color palette, is cheerful and fun. The pendant has playful overtones and yet is incredibly intricate. I can’t imagine just how many people would come up to you wanting a closer look at this intriguing pendant.
