Black Kitties

October 24, 2018

Halloween is not all about the creepy stuff! Although they may have dark associations, black cats can be so adorable, right? It’s not about their color … the black cat has gotten a bad rap, just because some superstitious humans decided they represented bad luck. Poor kitties.

This crafter goes by Umay Designs, and nothing else (apparently this week is going to be about both dark and mysterious things!) but I did find out that she hails from Turkey. There is not a lot of information but her designs are interesting, and certain to inspire if you are still looking to whip up some appropriate Halloween adornment. I’m not sure there is any polymer clay in here, but hey, it’s still a cool piece and we get to talk kitties this week! For materials, she primarily lists resin, both cast and sculpted, so I am thinking it is something like two-part epoxy and casting resin. It could easily be done with just polymer though, but casting your sculptures after you’ve made a good piece to start with is a smart business decision.

So you can see if you’re inspired by any of her cool and creepy ideas by dropping by her Etsy shop or following her on Instagram.

Fuzzy Feelings

Happy Valentine’s day to you all! Here is a little Valentines from me to all of you out there who follow and read my babbling posts and keep me going with your kind words and stories.

I don’t know if you realize this, but I only get to do this because of you all, especially those who help me keep the lights on by subscribing or buying The Polymer Arts magazine. I know that not everything in the magazine is for everyone but it is THE reason I am able to spend the time scouring the web and researching the artwork I post here. The blog is wholly a labor of love so if you appreciate this, please consider supporting the magazine and/or our advertising partners you see here as their contributions cover the maintenance and service costs, without which I could not justify doing this.

So, here is a visual image of my love and dedication to all of you. I have always adored Christine Pecaut‘s cats. They always look so happy and adoring, accented with whimsically placed canes and Dustin-inspired translucent slices. But this simple faux ceramic looking pair, momma and baby kitty, just tugs at the heartstrings even if you’re not much of a cat person.

She actually has a whole gallery of her cats that you can see here. Cats are not, by far, the only thing she creates. Find more of her work in her Etsy shop, on Instagram, and on her blog.

Creatures Redesigned

AGarrod animalsI think we’ll stick with inspiring creatures this week. And what creatures are more inspiring to us than those we share our life with? Dogs, cats, birds, fish …we find something in them that we connect with so it’s not surprising that they make their way into our art.

Recently Angela Garrod posted these kindred creatures of hers on Facebook. With a beautifully stylized approach, she captures the look, and even a few good expressions of some of people’s favorite animals, and this while playing with geometric designs. The hand scratched texture keeps the geometric shapes from feeling too stiff and sterile and adds quite a bit to what would otherwise be just simple shapes and lines through which we, somehow, recognize the variety of animals. I don’t know how our brains see that but more so, it is always a wonder how cartoonists and other artists create images with just a few simple lines and shapes and know we’ll see it. The brain is just pretty darn nifty.

Angela has been up to all kinds of cool and curious geometric designs of late. You can see her explorations through her shared photos on Flickr, her Facebook page, and the gallery on her website.
