Is Beauty a Matter of Good Taste?

When I first read this, I laughed of course. Then I thought, well, it really doesn’t matter. Even if you don’t consider yourself an artist — if you find something beautiful, your view is all that matters. But then I thought, if that’s true, why do we even have the concept of “good taste?” If we judge people’s choices are we not discounting their personal view?

I think beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
If you think something is beautiful then for you it is! “GOOD TASTE”? well I always liked to be different and my good taste may not be your good taste!?

You raise a good question regarding beauty. I love the sign. Where does one draw the line from beauty to uglness? Love your posts.

To each his own is my motto. I agree with Sandra D, we are all unique in what we see as beautiful….even if it borders on ugly. 🙂

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, yes, and we all have our own unique preferences and favorites. But then there are certain concepts of beauty that are universal (think of a sunrise over mountains or a child with ringlets in her hair). Good design has generally agreed upon characteristics as well. I have always been fascinated with this idea. What makes something be appealing? And are our preferences innate or learned? How much is cultural? I’m sure entire books have been written on this, but it still fascinates me.
